Ahmad Chalabi Deserves a Subpoena, Not a photo-op with Vice President Cheney
Tuesday, November 8, 2005
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman George Miller (D-CA) is calling on the Senate and House Intelligence Committees to subpoena visiting Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Chalabi for his testimony about his role in providing false intelligence about Iraq and leaking U.S. secrets to Iran.
Chalabi is reportedly meeting with Vice President Cheney and other top officials to discuss the situation in Iraq. But the Wall street Journal reported yesterday that neither Mr. Chalabi nor any top current or former U.S. officials have been interviewed by the FBI about charges that Chalabi leaked U.S. secrets to Iran. And there is no indication that the Senate Intelligence Committee will call Mr. Chalabi as a witness, even though just last week its chairman promised Senator Harry Reid and other Senate Democrats that he would complete his investigation into problems with pre-war intelligence this month.
“While Mr. Chalabi is sashaying around the streets of Washington, in between photo ops with Vice President Cheney and Secretary Rice, the Senate and House Intelligence Committees should issue him a subpoena,” said Miller. “It’s time we get to the bottom of Chalabi’s role in providing false intelligence to the White House and whether he’s working with Vice President Cheney to cover up the fact that the intelligence did not justify the war.”
Miller addressed this issue on the House floor Monday night. Read or watch Miller’s speech here: http://www.house.gov/georgemiller/statement11705.html.
