Miller announces millions for energy efficiency projects in Bay Area
WASHINGTON, DC - Millions of dollars for energy efficiency projects are on their way to Bay Area cities today, thanks to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that Congress and President Obama passed earlier this year, announced Congressman George Miller (D-Martinez).
In Miller’s congressional district, Contra Costa County and the cities of Concord, Martinez, Pittsburg, Richmond, Vacaville, and Vallejo will receive a total of $8.3 million in funding through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program. The $3.2 billion national program was included in the recovery act; Vice President Biden and Energy Secretary Steven Chu released the money this morning.
“This is the latest shot in the arm for our communities struggling to climb out of the recession,” Miller said. “Investing in energy efficiency will create jobs here at home while also helping to move America toward a more energy independent future. These two goals go hand in hand – economic growth and energy efficiency -- and the recovery act is a critical investment in this effort. This investment will allow our cities to reduce their energy use and cut down on their fossil fuel emissions, and will help us create and sustain good-paying jobs in the Bay Area."
The Center For Energy, Resources, and Economic Sustainability at the University of California has found that over the years, California's groundbreaking energy efficiency measures have helped to create about 1.5 million jobs with a total payroll of $45 billion and have saved households about $56 billion in energy costs.

Statement by Rep. George Miller on Bonus Money for AIG Executives
Statement by Rep. George Miller on Bonus Money for AIG Executives
For Immediate Release: March 17, 2009
WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Democrats announced today that legislation could come as soon as this week to ensure that AIG executives do not receive $156 million in bonus payments to executives who oversaw the collapse of the insurance giant, and that other companies that have received billions of dollars in federal bailout money would not be allowed to pay bonuses to their executives and top employees. Miller issued the following statement.
“AIG executives did not earn a bonus, they should not accept a bonus, and if they already did accept it they should return the bonus. If they don't return the bonus money voluntarily, we’re going to get the money back for the taxpayer."
One step Miller is advocating would tax as much as 100 percent of the bonuses AIG executives receive. He co-sponsored legislation today by Rep. Steve Israel (D-NY) to do just that. Other bills are circulating to take 60 or 70 percent of the bonus money and it is expected that the House will consider a bill similar to this approach this week or next.

Miller announces $2.1 million in Recovery funds awarded to local crime prevention programs
Washington, DC – Law enforcement officials in the 7th congressional district will benefit from an influx in funds from the recently passed American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, Rep. George Miller (D-Martinez) announced this morning. Over $2.1 million in federal funding will be allocated to Miller’s district; $15.2 million will be allocated to the Bay Area.
“Keeping police officers on the streets and funding crime prevention programs plays an important role in getting our economy back on track,” said Miller. “This investment will help our local police and sheriff departments struggling with declining local revenues to maintain their high level of service to prevent crime and keep our communities safe.”
The Recovery Act, passed by Congress and signed by President Obama last month in response to America’s worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, includes more than $4 billion for state and local law enforcement and other criminal and juvenile justice activities to help save and create jobs and get our economy moving forward. The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Formula Program, administered by OJP’s Bureau of Justice Assistance, allows states and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime and improve the criminal justice system.
JAG funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice for any one or more of the following purpose areas: law enforcement programs; prosecution and court programs; prevention and education programs; corrections and community corrections programs; drug treatment programs; and planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs.
