Miller Reminds Seniors, Low-income Workers and Others to File 2007 Income Tax Return In Order to Receive "Economic Stimulus" Rebate Checks

WASHINGTON, D.C. – 4/4/08 – Congressman George Miller is reminding people that they must file a 2007 federal income tax return in order to qualify for a rebate check approved by Congress to help stimulate the economy. Some people who qualify for a check might not normally file a tax return, such as certain seniors, veterans or low-income workers.

Earlier this year, Congress passed bipartisan economic stimulus legislation to help hard-working Americans who are struggling with the high costs of gas, health care and groceries, and to jumpstart the slowing economy and create jobs here at home.

“You could receive an individual payment of up to $600 – or $1200 if you are married and file jointly – and you may receive an additional $300 for each qualifying child,” Miller said. “Most people who are eligible for a stimulus payment will receive it automatically, but if you do not normally file a tax return, you may still be entitled to an economic stimulus payment under this new law. You must file a federal income tax return in order to get your check.

“There are Californians who don't owe any income taxes and may not normally file a federal tax return and who are still eligible to get a rebate check this spring or summer. Working families who earn too little to pay income taxes and seniors whose only income is Social Security are examples of families and individuals who may not normally file a federal tax return because they don't owe any taxes.

“If you do not ordinarily file a federal income tax return but had at least $3,000 in earned income in 2007, you must file a tax return this month in order to get the stimulus payment. This may apply to some workers, Social Security recipients, veterans and retired railroad workers.

“Don’t let this paperwork keep you from receiving your stimulus payment! Make sure you file a 2007 income tax return. Once you’ve filed your tax return, the IRS will do the rest – payments will be issued starting in May of this year,” Miller said.

Miller noted that there are many free tax preparation sites nationwide:

• The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provides help to low- and moderate-income taxpayers. Call 1-800-906-9887 to locate the nearest VITA site.
• The Internal Revenue Service has announced that if you only need to fill out a tax return to receive the stimulus payment, you may use the IRS Free File program to file a return – check out the “Free File - Economic Stimulus Payment” page at www.irs.gov.
• AARP offers the Tax-Aide counseling program at more than 7,000 sites nationwide during the filing season. To find an AARP Tax Aide site call 1-888-227-7669 or visit the AARP Web site at www.aarp.org.
