Rep. Miller Hails Veto Override of Bill to Ease Water and Flood Concerns in Bay Area
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman George Miller (D-CA) applauded the successful veto override vote today of the Water Resources Development Act. The legislation includes a number of projects for the Bay Area and for Contra Costa County to ease water and flood concerns
and improve the environment. President Bush vetoed the bill last Friday, despite its widespread bipartisan support in the House and the Senate.
In addition to much-needed and long-overdue California projects, the bill also includes funding for post-Katrina reconstruction and flood control work.
The legislation authorizes more than 200 projects to protect lives and livelihoods in communities from the devastating impacts of flooding by building and repairing floodwalls and levees and by restoring wetlands that absorb floodwaters.
“After many long years, this bill is finally being enacted into law,” said Miller. “This bipartisan bill, which was developed through cooperation and compromise with members of both parties, will ensure the continued viability of America’s water resources and infrastructure. We’ve waited a long time for this bill in Contra Costa County.”
The projects included for Contra Costa County are as follows:
The Water Resources Development Act creates jobs and authorizes crucial safety and security initiatives that will benefit millions of Americans and the communities in which they live and has bipartisan, veto-proof support in Congress.
“The success of the veto override vote is a significant legislative defeat for President Bush. Yet again, the President finds himself isolated on important issues such as Iraq, children’s health care, stem cell research and other national priorities. The President continues to defy the American people and stand in the way of progress,” said Miller.
