Tour of Richmond Area Schools, Community Health Program
CONCORD, CA -- On Friday, October 26, Congressman George Miller (D-Martinez) will participate in four East Bay events open to the news media.
Miller, the Chair of the House Education and Labor Committee, will visit and speak with educators and students at three schools in Richmond.
He will tour Richmond College Prep Pre-school and Richmond Elementary School followed by Nystrom Elementary School nearby and talk with the students and teachers about issues important to the local community.
Miller will then meet with staff at Neighbor House for a presentation detailing their work in establishing the West County HEAL Project -- Healthy Eating, Active Living. Through a 5-year, $1.5-million dollar grant from Kaiser Permanente, the West County HEAL Project -- one of three pilot community health programs in Northern California -- is working to create communities where healthy choices are easy, healthy food is accessible, and the street and parks are safe for outdoor exercising such as jogging and bicycling. Specifically, the project aims to reverse chronic obesity and diabetes trends, especially within African-American and Latino populations.
