MILLER ANNOUNCES HOUSE SUPPORT FOR LOCAL PUBLIC SAFETY AND YOUTH PROGRAMS

WASHINGTON -- The House of Representatives approved legislation today to fund programs under the Departments of Commerce and Justice and other federal agencies, including several program in Richmond and Contra Costa County. The annual funding bill, which contains support for three programs included at the request of Congressman George Miller (D-CA), must also be approved by the Senate and win support from President Bush before these services can be funded.

"I am pleased the House is supporting these valuable services in Richmond and the county to help young people and to enhance communication between local enforcement agencies," said Miller.

The three programs in the Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies bill that Miller won funding for total $1 million and are described below.

Richmond Police Activities League One-Stop Youth Center $450,000 to Richmond PAL for their youth program to help cover operational costs of their new multi-purpose gymnasium that will expand youth outreach and include a mentoring program to help reduce juvenile crime. The Richmond PAL currently provides educational, social and recreational opportunities for local youth.

Richmond Youth Academy $200,000 to the Richmond Black Firefighters Association, with support from the Richmond Fire Department and the City, to provide mentoring, discipline, college tours, computer training and literacy, gang prevention and fire safety and training to Richmond youth. This money will go towards equipment and to expand development of their successful program.

Contra Costa County ARIES Integrated Justice Information Systems $350,000 to expand Contra Costa Countyís ARIES Integrated Justice Information Systems program to contiguous counties, provide regional crime analysis data, and provide for a regional alert system. When completed, this program will provide a single access point to criminal justice system administration within all Bay Area Counties. The funding would greatly expand the effectiveness of a proven system by expanding it and extending queries to the jail and records systems. Since initial funding in 2004, program users can now access the arrest and booking records of 48 agencies in Contra Costa and Alameda Counties. This funding was jointly requested with Rep. Ellen Tauscher (D-CA).
