Miller Statement on GOP Energy Bill
‘Their Bill Does Nothing to Bring Down Gas Prices, Promote Energy Independence & Conservation’
WASHINGTON, DC – Representative George Miller (D-Martinez), a member of the House Resources Committee, issued this statement on a Republican energy bill narrowly approved by the House this afternoon that fails to lower gas prices and protect consumers from price gouging at the pump:
“America desperately needs a sound energy policy for economic and environmental reasons. We don’t have one, and the bill that was barely approved in the House today certainly does not provide us one.“Sadly, in a display of total incompetence, the Republican leadership in the House barely passed another energy bill today that will do nothing to improve America’s energy independence, security and reliability. Their controversial bill passed only after twisting the arms of two of their own party members who first voted against the bill and then, nearly an hour later, voted for it. In the end, the bill passed by only two votes. I voted against it.
“Their bill does nothing to bring down gas prices and promote energy independence or conservation. It will do a great deal of harm to the environment and to the taxpayer.
“The best thing that can be said about this legislation is that it could have been worse: it originally included language to allow virtually unlimited drilling along our protected coastlines. That language, from the House Resources Committee, was removed from the bill yesterday. But this bill would still undermine the Clean Air Act and would allow new refineries to be built on wildlife refuges.
“This bill, and the process by which it passed, is a disgrace. We can do better – a lot better – than this, and I hope that Congress will have the opportunity to consider real energy security and conservation strategies to bring down the price of gas, reduce wasteful consumption, and expand responsible energy sources.”
