President Bush Fails to Protect Americans From Proven Environmental Threat

WASHINGTON -- Congressman George Miller (D-CA), a leading environmentalist in Congress, issued the following statement today in response to President Bush's decision to reject his own advisers' call to regulate the emission of carbon dioxide, a pollutant that contributes to air pollution and global warming.

"It is insulting to the American people that President Bush is using the electricity crisis in California as an excuse to allow old, inefficient power plants to continue polluting our air. It is a strong indication that the Bush Administration is cow-towing to the oil and coal industry and is not listening to science or public opinion.

"The fact is, the president's treasury secretary and environmental administrator believe that science supports steps to control CO2 emissions. I find it alarming that rather than listen to his own advisers, the President instead is listening to the lobbyists for the coal and oil industry who seek to continue to contaminate our air.

"The reality is that old coal and oil plants release large amounts of CO2 and that CO2 emissions contribute to global warming. These are facts, not opinions. Americans expect their President to protect and lead our nation. With yesterday's announcement on CO2, the President has failed the American people. I call upon President Bush to reconsider his position on carbon dioxide emissions and work with Congress to address short-term and long-term energy and environmental issues."
