Audio transcript from Marianas press conference
Congressman George Miller

For years Tom DeLay and Jack Abramoff and their allies used their power, their influence and their corrupt practices to defend the indefensible. They arranged for appropriations, for organized campaign contributions, led tour groups for members of Congress and their staff to the Marianas and directed money to questionable charities to solidify their power in Washington. At their direction, the House of Representatives refused to stop well documented threats to American security, to criminal activity, to violations of labor law, to forced abortion, to denial of religious freedom and illicit sex trade and human trafficking. All of that they prevented the congress of the United States from considering with the legislation that was offered in previous years.

My name is Hilda Solis I’m chair of the Women’s Democratic Working Group and I support fair wages. I believe that the United States should enforce labor laws on all US soil. And for years the garment workers in the U.S. territory of the Commonwealth of Northern Marianas Island, have only earned $3.05 an hour, with no hope of an increase or enforcement of labor laws or an increase in the minimum wage. With Jack Abramoff and Tom DeLay in the pocket of the garment industry, and the local government, the guest workers almost all women from China, Philippines and Thailand suffer as indentured slaves. These women work 20 hours a day and live in squalor. All in the United States territory.
