Before Barack Obama became president in January 2009, the American economy was shrinking by about 6% a year, losing more than 700,000 jobs a month. Our economy was in free fall. George Miller worked with the president and his Democratic colleagues to pass the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to provide tax relief to families and small businesses, create and save millions of jobs for teachers, police and construction workers, and begin to put our economy back on track. Economists now agree the recovery act saved the economy from total collapse. Of course, we are not out of the woods yet, and George is working hard to continue to create jobs and strengthen the economy. Take a look at this map to see how the Recovery Act created jobs in the Bay Area.
