January 21st marked the 2 year anniversary of Citizens United. This was the Supreme Court decision to allow corporate donors to independently spend limitless funds on political campaigns. Due to loopholes put in place by the decision, it has even in many cases allowed for corporations to spend huge sums without properly reporting their spending. This process could lead to huge corruption in our political system. We simply cannot treat corporations as people or allow them to anonymously use millions of dollars to defeat any candidate they disapprove of.
I’ve fought against this kind of unlimited money in politics my entire political career – and this decision moved us backwards, not forwards, in our fight against unlimited dollars in politics.
And that’s why I’m co-sponsoring Rep Ted Deutch’s (LINK) Constitutional Amendment, H.J. Res 90, commonly known as OCCUPIED: Outlawing Corporate Cash Undermining the Public Interest in our Elections and Democracy Act. It will help balance the power between corporations and the people that was thrown out of whack by Citizens United. The OCCUPIED Act will overturn the Citizens United Supreme Court decision and completely ban corporate money from America’s electoral process as it has been historically.
