Cosponsored the Outsourcing Accountability Act this week

Right now, more than ever, we need to support companies that are creating jobs here in America and not overseas. This is why I am co-sponsoring the Outsourcing Accountability Act, a new bill that will require companies that outsource jobs to report how many of their employees are based in other countries. Rep. Jerry McNerney (D-CA) is one of the lead sponsors of the bill, and I’m proud to join him in this effort.

The Outsourcing Accountability Act will allow consumers and investors to make educated decisions on if they want to spend their money with companies that create American jobs OR if consumers want to spend their money with companies that create jobs overseas. The bill would require publicly traded companies to report in their SEC filings the company’s number of employees by country and, within the U.S., by state. These companies are currently required to report their total number of employees, but not these employees’ location. By adding this new information, the bill provides transparency in the outsourcing of American jobs and gives the consumer the ability to make informed decisions about where they want to spend their money.

Through this enhanced transparency, the bill would provide new incentives for companies to create jobs here and would give policymakers the necessary information to improve policies to bring even more jobs home. We know that strengthening the American economy is achieved by creating jobs in America. This bill would mark an important step forward in the effort to create jobs in the East Bay and across the country.

Co-sponsoring the Outsourcing Accountability Act is only my latest effort to help stop the shipping of jobs overseas.

I’m going to keep working in Congress to make sure that we can make it in America.
