Rep. George Miller Names U.S. Service Academy Nominees

U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-Martinez) today announced his nominations to the U.S. Service Academies for the Class of 2014, who will enter the Academies in 2010.

“This group of students displays a great array of talents in their academic, athletic, and extracurricular achievements,” said Miller. “Each has worked hard to earn this nomination to a U.S. Service Academy. I’m proud to nominate each of them and I know that their greatest achievements are ahead of them.”

The nominees are:

Benicia: Jacqueline Barnum (St. Patrick-St.Vincent High School)
David Kramer (The Athenian School)

Concord: Stephanie DeBoer (Berean Christian High School)

Crockett: Dylan Fournier (John Swett High School)

El Sobrante: Eugene Yang (Albany High School)

Pinole: Christian Delaney (Pinole Valley High School)

Pittsburg: Erin Hoffstetter (Las Lomas High School)
Dana Cruz (Pittsburg High School/ UCB)

San Pablo: Ryan-Thomas Brown (St. Mary’s College High School)

Vallejo: Aaron Fess (Las Lomas High School/ CA Maritime Academy)
John Vegara (Dr. James J. Hogan High School)

Vacaville: Johnny Green (Will C. Wood High School)
Derek Jenkins (Vacaville High)
Keith Leenders (Vacaville High)
Alyssa Militano (Vacaville High)
Angelina Navarro (Vanden High School)

Congressional nomination is the first step in the admission process for the service academies. Each year, Members of Congress nominate outstanding high school students to the U.S. Military, Naval, Air Force and Merchant Marine Academies. The academies make the final decision on which students they accept from a national pool of applicants. The excellent educational opportunities and prestige of attending one of the nation's Service Academies makes competition for nomination and admission extremely difficult.

Students interested in attending one of the academies should visit www.georgemiller.house.gov or call (510) 262-6500 for more information about the nomination process.

Miller's Statement on Cal State's 50th

Rep. George Miller made the following statement today about H.Res 1117, a resolution commending and congratulating the California State University system on the occasion of its 50th anniversary:

"Madam Speaker, I am pleased to join my colleagues from the California congressional delegation today to recognize the 50th anniversary of the California State University system.

The state’s individual State Colleges were incorporated into what is today known as the California State University system by the Donahoe Higher Education Act of 1960, designed as part of the California Master Plan for Higher Education to meet the future needs of a growing state. That bill was authored by my father, George Miller Jr., who served in the State Senate for many years.

Today, the campuses of the Cal State system can be found throughout California, and they make up the country’s largest and most diverse university system. In my district’s backyard, CSU East Bay is providing opportunities for young people from around the Bay Area, preparing them for the future.

I am pleased to recognize the 50th anniversary of the California State University system, and I look forward to working with the CSU system and others in California and across the country to make college more affordable and accessible for students today and for generations to come."

On my way on the bus to the WH -- hopeful that this will be a good discussion about how we reform health care and reform insurance. You know, when you look at Democratic and President Obama’s proposal you start see the areas of agreement, as Republican Congressman Boustany said, the proposals agree on about 80 percent.

At Blair house. This is only the second time I have been here for a meeting with a president in my 36 years in Congress. That is the kind of message the president is sending about the importance of this meeting and the importance of health care to our families and our economy… and what we all know, that the current system is crushing families and small business… I think one last cup of coffee before we start.
