Usher(ing) Public Service
On Wed, Feb 25th Usher joined me at a hearing to talk about the importance of public service and volunteerism.
This came one day after President Obama announced that public service will play a key role in bringing us out of the economic crisis, and getting our country back on track.
I’ll continue working with Usher and other community leaders over the coming months as we launch a new era of public service to build a stronger, more vibrant America.

Congressman George Miller had the honor yesterday of assisting in the swearing in of Congresswoman Hilda Solis (D-CA) as the new Secretary of Labor in the Obama Administration. Solis becomes the first Latino in American history to serve as Labor Secretary and brings with her a wealth of knowledge on labor issues. She and Congressman Miller, who chairs the Education and Labor Committee, will work closely together to protect the health, safety and rights or workers and to help retrain America’s workers and create new jobs here at home.

Miller to Participate in Obama's fiscal summit
George has been invited to speak at a panel on health care at President Obama’s White House summit on fiscal responsibility. The panel also includes Peter Orszag, director of the Office of Management and Budget, Melody Barnes, director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, among others.
Before attending the summit, George released the following statement:
“Passing the President’s economic recovery plan was only the first step in our efforts to restore our nation’s economic and fiscal health. Eight years of reckless fiscal policies and the ongoing economic crisis have left our country in a sea of red ink. President Obama and Speaker Pelosi have made it clear that they are committed to using the resources of the federal government to rescue our economy but that they also are committed to operating our government in a fiscally responsible manner. Whether it is our health care system, our tax policy, or other issues, I look forward to working with the president and the speaker to make our nation more efficient while raising the quality of services Americans receive. Doing so will strengthen our middle class and our nation."
Improving workers’ access to quality, affordable health care is a top priority for the Education and Labor Committee in the 111th Congress. As chairman of the committee, George shares jurisdiction on health care reform with the House Ways and Means and Energy and Commerce Committees.
