What a Week! GI Bill, Gas Prices, and more...
This week … In Congress
Unemployment benefits were extended by Democrats and some Republicans when Congress passed legislation that would immediately provide up to 13 weeks workers who have exhausted the 26 weeks of regular unemployment benefits. Many families who are finding it tough to find a job in the current economy can benefit from this extension. In addition, extending unemployment benefits is one of the most cost-effective and fast-acting ways to stimulate the economy because the money is spent quickly, according to the CBO.
House Democrats overrode the President’s veto of the Farm Bill on Wednesday.
This week we took the first step to make it absolutely clear that the Americans with Disabilities Act protects anyone who faces discrimination on the basis of a disability as the Education and Labor committee approved the ADA Amendments Act.
The GI Bill for the 21st Century passed Congress this week. This new GI bill restores full, four-year college scholarships to veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars to help make them part of an economic recovery like the veterans of World War II. It will give our returning troops the tools to succeed after military service.

This week… In the News
As gas prices remain well above $4.00 per gallon in California, the President continued to advocate for drilling off the coast of California. Oil companies already have access to 68 million acres of federal land that is not even in production. I joined fellow Democrats in telling oil companies to either use this land, or lose it. They shouldn’t get to stockpile while Americans are paying $4.00 at the pump. The real solution to America’s energy crisis is an investment in renewable and alternative energy sources.
This week … In Washington
It’s always a pleasure to see my constituents when they stop by my office when visiting DC. This week the Garcha family from Vallejo stopped by. (If you are planning a trip to DC, contact my office at 202-225-2095 for information about Congressional tours and tickets).
