What a Week - 4/18/08

On the Floor

  • The mortgage and credit crisis's negative impact may now land on college students. According to the Financial Times:

"A rising number of private and public lenders have been backing out of offering student loans, hit by the fallout from the credit squeeze and the declining profitability of federally-insured education loans."

We wanted to make sure that the credit crisis wouldn't affect students ability to pay for college with federal loans. So this week I put forth a bill that the House passed overwhelmingly allowing the Education Department to purchase student loans and raise the amount students can borrow in the event of stress in the credit markets. This will help make sure that no matter what is happening with the banks on Wall Street, people on main street can find a way to pay for college.

The bill carries no additional cost for taxpayers. To find out more about the bill, click here.
